Caring for Hand-Dyed Yarn

Hand-dyed yarn is an artisan art form created by a fiber artist as an expression of creativity. Using such a product in fiber crafts results in unique, one-of-a-kind projects that blend the creativity of the fiber artist with your own to create something brand new.

Using and caring for hand-dyed yarn requires a bit of special knowlege.

Hand-dyed yarn can exhibit natural variations in color. To ensure a consistent look in your project, it's best to purchase all the yarn you need at once.

When using multiple skeins, alternate between them every few rows to blend any subtle differences in tone and pattern. Please note that some dyes may continue to release color for a short time with each wash.

For projects involving high contrast colorwork, we recommend swatching and blocking beforehand to check for any potential color transfer.

To block your finished project, soak it briefly in cold water with a wool wash that doesn’t require rinsing. We recommend Eucalan. Following the soak, gently remove excess water by laying the project on an absorbent towel and rolling it up, squeezing gently. Do not wring the water from the item.

Complete the blocking by laying the project out flat on a surface and gently shape the item according the pattern directions. T-pins may be used to hold it in place. Allow the project to fully dry.
